A tradition my family and I have had for a few years before long term traveling is going to eat dim sum on Christmas day. We’ve been going to the same restaurant but since we spent the Christmas season in Syracuse, New York, we couldn’t go to the same restaurant in Florida.
Instead, we went to Sakana Ya Sushi Bar in the Armory Square neighborhood of downtown Syracuse. The streets were deserted when we drove through Armory Square. On Wednesdays, Sakana Ya sushi bar has all you can eat sushi for $25 per person. It happened to be Christmas was on a Wednesday!
Sakana Ya sushi bar is connected to another restaurant called Namu which has separate tables which makes it an environment to have conversations. Meanwhile, the sushi bar has a long table and you sit next to each other and face a conveyer belt.
With the all you can eat sushi on Wednesday, watch the moving conveyer belt with plates on them and pick whichever and however many you want.
The last time I experienced a sushi conveyer belt was in Malaysia, almost four years ago. Here’s a Vine video of the conveyer belt in action.
You don’t have to be limited to the conveyer belt. Order from the menu so you can have something made specially for you.
What caught my attention was the name of this sushi, Cupcake! I ordered it out of curiosity and this is what I got.
It looks like a mess of color but there’s actually four pieces of sushi topped with a spicy filling and lots of sauce. And this is some sushi passing by me on the conveyer belt. Since it was Christmas, they added red and green caviar.
At one point, a couple and small child also ate at the sushi bar. They didn’t take long to eat so once again we were the only ones there. It almost felt like we were at home.
Several plates later, I decided it was time to throw in the towel (or chopsticks!). This is my brother and I’s plates all stacked up.
We walked out of the restaurant into the cold central New York winter. The streets were lit up with Christmas lights on the trees and lamp posts.
Do you have a Christmas tradition?
