Sometimes words aren’t enough to describe something. This holds true for the incredible views from our road trip through Bolivia. I couldn’t help but to look out the window when we crossed the border from Argentina into Bolivia. The landscape was so different than any of the other landscapes we had driven by starting in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
It’s hard to describe how amazing it was to look out the windows so here are some pictures of views from driving through Bolivia:
In the above picture, the mountains contained a few different colors! This was when we were driving to Tupiza, Bolivia from the Argentina/ Bolivia border.
We spent many hours driving. We had about four driving days. Each driving day was from around 7 am to 4 or 5 pm, so it was around 10 hours of sitting in the overland truck per day. There are barely any gas stations and no toilets either. So we had to go in the bushes, which was a new experience for me. It had never crossed my mind that you could actually ‘go’ in somewhere other than a toilet. But hey, at least the views were nice.
Other than bathroom stops, or I should say bush stops, we also had lunch stops. On our way to Uyuni from Tupiza we had pizza. Almost all restaurants in Tupiza serve pizza so we got some for the road trip.
We would try to stop for lunch breaks at the most picturesque spot. Here’s one of them:
One of the things most of our group spent a lot of time doing during the driving days was look out the windows. Other than mountains, there were llama! At first, when we passed by a llama, everyone took their cameras out and we were like wow llama!
But llama are present everywhere in Bolivia. Some are wild but a lot of them belong to people. The ones that were owned had little ribbons on them, probably for identification. So due to having so many llama, the llama road signs were a necessity.
This is a view while driving from Uyuni into Potosi, one of the highest cities in the world.
Sometimes we’d stop for picture stops because the view was just that amazing. In this picture, we actually drove on the roads down in the valley and had driven up the hill to where we could see the road below.
I noticed that you have to be a very skilled driver in order to drive here. I would say for almost all the roads, on one side would be a mountain and the other side would be a cliff. If you made a wrong move or weren’t careful enough, you could just drive off the side! I have respect for our driver who had to constantly make turns and be careful not to drive us off the side. And to top all of that, we were in a huge truck!
Standing on the road 🙂
