Walking down the streets of Santiago Chile, you really can’t miss the stray dogs. They are everywhere. Locals didn’t seem to notice them but we aren’t locals so we couldn’t help but notice at first.
Most of the time we ignored the dogs except for two instances.
On our fifth day in Santiago Chile, we walked out of our apartment building when I saw this dog (pictured above). I remembered I didn’t take a pic of a stray dog yet so I got my iPhone out. My dad didn’t know I already took the pic but he decided to whistle to make that dog stay so I could take the pic. Little did we know, this dog would follow us for at least 20 minutes.
When we crossed the street, the dog followed. When we turned left or right, the dog followed. We walked into a store for a second to see if the dog would still follow. It waited outside. At one point, our follower dog came across 2 other dogs and all 3 dogs started following us! My mom doesn’t happen to like dogs… so having 3 dogs following us was not something she appreciated.
Finally we decided to stay in a bakery for a couple of minutes and when we came out, the dogs had split up.
Then here’s the story of the dog pictured above. He’s a lot bigger than the little one that followed us. When the little dog was following us, we were walking to meet up with a tour group. When we got there, this giant mastiff dog was there and followed our group for the entire 4 hour walking tour.
He barked every time the tour guide tried to speak and was a bit possessive of our tour group. Whenever we came across other dogs that would try to follow our group, he’d bark at that dog, scaring it away.
So all in all on that day, we pretty much had dogs following us for the time we spent out of our apartment.
