I’m nearing the end of my online college career and am so close to getting my undergraduate degree. Hard work that started almost two and a half years ago will soon pay off.
Whether you’re an online college student or go to a college, I know it’s not easy to stay motivated.
Here are some tips I’ve done to stay motivated throughout online college:
1. Give yourself some grace
Online college, and college in general, isn’t easy. Sometimes when you push yourself to hard to get an unreasonable amount of assignments done, you start to feel unmotivated. Or maybe you just don’t see a point in doing it anymore.
In that case, take a reasonable amount time off. That is, if you’re an online student, you can work your schedule around and take some time to think and then get back to it.
Action step: See where your schedule will allow you to take some time off. I recommend always using a desk calendar to see where you can put in a little break time.
2. Clearly map out your progress
I have a sheet of paper printed out with the names of the classes that I need to complete in order to get my degree. Every time I finish a class, I take a pen and cross it out. Physically taking the pen to cross it out and seeing it with your eyes, not on the screen, is rewarding.
Action step: Purchase a nice magnetic board, print out a list of your classes and leave it on the board to be displayed wherever you usually get assignments done so you can see your progress.
3. Get away from your usual workspace
Doing the same thing over and over again may get boring. Especially if you’re doing school online, you likely don’t leave the house very often. Once in a while, take your laptop and materials over to the library, or find a nice cafe. Being a new spot may help get your motivation up.
Action step: Find a place that has great WiFi, a good amount of seating and quiet enough so you can get work done.
4. Think towards the future
Even if you just started online college, you started, and that’s one step closer to finishing! Think about all the ways that you’ve already overcome challenges to get to where you currently are. Also, keep your end goal in the forefront of your mind. It helps to think of the future instead of feeling unmotivated for whatever reason.
If it helps too, one of my motivations for doing well and finishing a class is that I’d really rather not have to retake the class. Because that would mean spending more money.
Action step: Purchase a nice journal and start logging in your thoughts and ideas. One day you may look back and remember how far you’ve come!
