On our most recent trip, we went on an 11 day cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line to Cartagena in Colombia, Aruba, Curacao, St. Maarten and St. Thomas. I’ve always thought that all islands are similar… beaches, sun, resorts… nothing too different from island to island. (Well, I also admit I didn’t do any research before I went like my parents had.) So when we were in St. Maarten, I wasn’t expecting anything worth writing a whole blog post about. But I was wrong because here it is!
When we got to St. Maarten, we met up with our driver/tour guide who is related to a friend that goes to our church. So my mom had called ahead of time to arrange our tour. The cruise ships dock on the Dutch side of St. Maarten and after driving for some time, our guide stopped to show us the Princess Juliana International Airport.
I was like oh cool, an airport, yay (sarcastically). Meanwhile my dad was prepping his camera and new lenses he bought and my mom had her iPhone in hand because they knew what we were stopping for.
Right around the corner of the airport, we stopped by this restaurant/bar which I later learned was on Maho Beach. Not really sure why we were there, I spotted this sign:
Maho beach in St. Maarten is where people go to to watch airplanes land. It says ‘danger’ because the planes are extremely close to the beach. I’ve seen airplanes land before but never this close.
Here I am on the beach watching the plane coming. With the exception of this photo that my mom took of me while capturing the plane, I took all photos here with my iPhone.
Here’s the pic I took of just the beach:
The plane is coming!
And the closest I could get:
Instagrammed version (if that’s a word):
And here’s one my mom took from her iPhone. As you can see, its practically a tourist attraction.
We were at Maho beach in the morning. Our guide told us the giant commercial planes only arrive in the afternoons. We only got to see smaller planes land. So here’s a video from YouTube that shows a 747 landing!
All in all, I found out not all islands are the same. Some have some really cool attractions, like the St. Maarten beach airplane landing that’s totally worth writing about. I’m kind of glad I didn’t know about it before hand because it was a really nice surprise.
Have you been to Maho Beach and seen an airplane land (or want to)? Please let me know by leaving a comment below!
