In the south of Chile is the Chilean Lake District. We took a plane from Punta Arenas which is in Patagonia, the southern most region of Chile to Puerto Montt, a city in the Lake District.
From there, we took a taxi to Puerto Varas where we stayed for 7 nights. Our hotel is right in the center of Puerto Varas where there are great views of the Osorno Volcano and Lake Llanquihue.
While staying in Puerto Varas, we took short trips around the Lake District to places like the Chiloé island, Frutillar, and Puerto Octay. Puerto Octay is a town that is across the Lake Llanquihue from Puerto Varas. It’s known for producing cheese.
Our taxi driver dropped us off at the Plaza de Armas and we began exploring. I noticed it seemed very small, non touristy and has very old buildings. Some of the buildings had signs, some as old as 100 years. It made Puerto Varas seem like a huge city. There were locals sitting around the plaza and just a few convenience stores.
We decided to check out the cheese at one of the stores right next to the bus station.
Here’s a video I shot while at the store:
