Do you use Pinterest group boards? It’s not a new feature but if you aren’t using them yet, here are some reasons why you should use them and steps on how to create one of these boards. This is your guide on how to use Pinterest group boards!
What are Pinterest group boards?
Normally when you create a board on Pinterest, you’re the only person that can pin to that board. However with a group board, you and other Pinterest users can pin to the board. This feature is also available to use with secret boards.
Why use Pinterest group boards?
1. Create a community
Let’s say you really like Argentina. You create a Pinterest board called Argentina to put pictures of the places you want to visit in Argentina and maybe even your own photos if you’ve been there before.
Now pretend you have a friend who’s also an Argentina enthusiast. You can invite them to the board, allowing them to pin to the board too. This friend is now pinning pictures of Argentina to your Argentina board. Pretend again that your friend also has a friend that loves Argentina. They can invite that person to pin to the board too.
So you can see it’s a cycle, you can potentially create a community of Argentina fans and enjoy each other’s photos.
Continuing with the Argentina scenario, you currently have a community of Argentina fans. And you’re now planning your first trip to Argentina. Using the pins that other Pinterest users have pinned, you can take their ideas of where to visit, restaurants and things to do. You’re collaborating and planning your trip with your community created with a Pinterest group board.
3. Increase followers
When you participate in a group board, others who are also a participants in the board will see your pins. If they like what you pin, they may end up following you. The more people in the group, the more followers you could potentially gain from participating in a group board.
A way to increase your chances of having someone following you is if you follow the Pinterest etiquette. It also means not posting anything spammy or even not too much and taking over the entire board with your content.
Any group board that you’re participating in appears on your Pinterest profile page. When you accept the invitation to pin to a group board, the board will automatically appear on your profile page. This board is on all of the participants’ profile pages.
If one of the participants has 1,000 followers and pins to the board, potentially 1,000 people have seen the pin. They may get interested and check out the board that the pin was pinned to. Because you’re a participant in the board, they can also potentially see your pins too.
Say there are 10 members of the group board. And each member has 500 followers. That’s 5,000 people that can potentially see your pins and that’s definitely more exposure!
5. More traffic to your site
There’s a study that found that Pinterest drives more traffic to publishers than Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit combined. Here’s what that means. I wrote a blog post about my trip to Buenos Aires Argentina (yes, we’re still talking about Argentina :)) with several photos. With the Pin It button on my website, I pinned some of the pictures to my Argentina board including a picture of Teatro Colón, an opera house in Buenos Aires.
Since my Teatro Colón picture was pinned from my website, when people click on the picture, it’ll link to the original source which is my website. When Pinterest users search “Teatro Colón”, they could see my pin, click on it and may end up on my website. That’s traffic.
When pinning to a group board, if you pinned a picture from your website, participants will see the pin and may visit your website through the pin.
Convinced that you should start using Pinterest group boards? Here’s How to create a group board on Pinterest:
1. Go to your Pinterest profile page and click on Create a board, on the left next to your boards.
2. Fill in all the necessary information to create a board.
You can also make one of your current boards a group board. In this example, we’ll use a board that I already created called (you guessed it!)…. Argentina.
3. Click on Edit and this screen will appear.
4. Look for the Who can pin? section. You can add start typing a name of a Pinterest user, select them and click invite.
There’s also an option to put someone’s email and they’ll be sent an invite to join your board.
5. You can also invite more people at this time. After you’re done inviting, you’ll see next to your own profile the words “you created this board” and the people you invited will have the words “invited by you”.
6. Now that you’ve invited the person, they will have to accept your invitation.
To see your invitations, log in to your Pinterest account, on the upper right hand corner where you’d usually log out or see your notifications, you’ll notice it’ll say ‘person’s name’ invited you to pin to ‘name of board’.
Click Accept. (Or decline if you don’t want to join.)
7. When you click to Edit the group board, you’ll see all the participants. You can also invite more people and have the option to get email notifications.
8. The board looks normal except on the left hand corner, there are the profile pictures of the people who can pin to the group board.
9. And finally, you can tell whether a board is a group board if on the right hand corner of the board, it has this little icon of three people.
And that’s it!
