After taking a nice landscape picture with your smartphone, you’ll want to upload it to Instagram.
Except wait. Instagram makes you crop the photo, making your landscape photo into a square.
Cropping a landscape photo sometimes just doesn’t work. Like if it’s a group picture. If you make it a square, you’ll leave some people out of the picture.
To avoid that, (and avoid having your friends ask why they aren’t in that picture!) there is a way to post your whole picture without cropping it.
There are several apps developed and available on the app store that you can use to do this. And it works for both landscape (horizontal) and portrait (vertical) photos.
Here are 3 apps to help you make your picture not square on Instagram:
These apps I’ve selected to feature are all free and you can find on the Apple app store.
This free app allows you to upload a photo from your phone. After selecting the photo, it’ll be put on a square shaped canvas. The full landscape photo will be in the center of the square.
The app allows you to center the photo, or adjust it to wherever you want it to be within the square. You can also change the color of the background or just leave it white. (When it’s on Instagram it won’t look like a square photo if you leave it white.)
To me, the app seems a little complicated, especially during my first time using it. It’s not very ‘step-by-step’ like and there are ads everywhere.
2. Square FX with Shapes
Square FX also let’s you first choose a photo from your phone and move it around the square canvas. Additionally, you can change the color of the background or leave it white.
But an added feature is the fact that you can add shapes onto the photo. For example, a triangle, star or heart. The downside is though the app is free to download, you will have to pay a fee to access the majority of the shapes.
When you’re done editing, the Next button is clearly visible and you are later prompted to save or post it directly to Instagram. Simple enough.
The app also has ads but to me, it’s not as complicated as Squaready.
A third app is InstaSize. This is my preferred app of choice. It’s simple, with less features than the others. But I feel like InstaSize gets the job done, with the least steps.
Here are some steps on How to Make Your Picture Not Square on Instagram using Instasize:
1. When you first open the app, your camera roll will already appear.
2. Select the photo you want to make not square when you post it on Instagram.
3. You have options to add a filter (or just keep it at Original so you can use Instagram’s filters).
Or add another photo and make it a collage, change the color of the border, adjust the brightness, and even add some text and free stickers.
4. Or you can skip all of this and just go directly to the upper right hand corner where there’s a red arrow.
5. Now you have options to share it directly to Instagram or just save it to your camera roll.
7. It’s that simple. The app with the least steps and less cluttered.
Note there are ads too on InstaSize.
The picture used for this example was taken in Ecuador. It’s two hours away from Cuenca in a small town. The town is so small, that it’s practically just a few buildings with a dirt road running through it.
I went with a few friends from a church in Ecuador where we went to see the kids of the village, help out at an event and meet the coordinators who live in the town so they could plan other events with the church’s help in the future.
