On the way back to Auckland from Rotorua, we stopped in Matamata- the home of Hobbiton, where the Hobbit movies were filmed.
Apparently everything is left as how it was in the movies. And this (above) is one of the hobbit homes!
Ticket prices for tours are pricey compared to other things to do ($75!) and there were so many people. Each tour group was the size of a big charter bus (which we had to take to get to Hobbiton).
It was very hot with no shade and we walked for about an hour getting to see the view from the top of the hill at the Hobbiton movie set!
The area is in a working cow and sheep farm. Peter Jackson picked it for filming because it fit three of his requirements- the giant tree (on the left), the water and hills. And that’s the Green Dragon Inn on the right.
At the Green Dragon, we were told the original one used for the movie was burned down (for a scene) and rebuilt in the exact spot for tourists to visit.
Included in the ticket price is a drink at the tavern including four types of beer.
