As with all major cities, people, cars, buildings, constant activity, lights… it’s all noise.
Sometimes as a local or even a tourist, this noise can become overwhelming. And at times, you need a break from it.
In Hong Kong, you don’t have to travel far to take a moment to breathe and relax. The beach may not be too far away from the city center of Hong Kong, but why not go somewhere closer, to a hotel in the middle of the activity yet doesn’t bring in the stressful busyness?
With eight restaurants to choose from, Island Shangri-La is the go-to hotel. And for a lively, yet calming atmosphere, check out afternoon tea at Island Shangri-La…
Island Shangri-La is located in Central, Hong Kong’s business center. It’s part of Pacific Place, a complex with a shopping center, offices and hotels. Island Shangri-La is among the three major hotels in the complex along with JW Marriott and Conrad.
It is walking distance to Hong Kong Park and the tram station to visit the Peak for stunning views of Hong Kong. To access other parts of Hong Kong, the hotel is also walking distance to Admiralty metro station.
Connected to the lobby of Island Shangri-La is the Lobby Lounge where afternoon tea is served. It’s part of the lobby but feels like a separate room as it’s elevated by a few steps and tucked away to the side.
Huge chandeliers with floor to ceiling oil paintings and windows have a similar feel to its sister property in Shanghai. It’s very lively with the lounge being full every day of the week. And there’s live music during tea time provided by violinists and a pianist.
Having afternoon tea at Island Shangri-La provides a break from buildings, cars and busyness of a large city especially if you get a seat by the windows. There’s a view of a sort of small garden with an over 100 year old Banyan tree which was kept during the construction of the hotel.
A large variety of teas are available at Island Shangri-La from red teas to white teas and also a selection of Dilmah Tea. Dilmah is a popular brand of Ceylon tea.
I went with “Lychee with Rose and Almond”, a Dilmah tea part of their t-Series. It’s a delicious black tea blend of fruit, nuts and flowers. The tea leaves for each tea that Island Shangri-La serves is displayed upon entering the Lobby Lounge.
Island Shangri-La offers two tea packages- Traditional Afternoon Tea and a seasonal package. During my visit, was a “Belcolade Chocolate Delights “, a chocolate afternoon tea where the hotel partnered with a Belgium chocolate brand, Belcolade.
This afternoon tea packaged used only Belcolade chocolate for the pastries.
On the bottom tier of the tea tray are the savories – Norwegian smoked salmon, sour cream, dill infusion; duck liver pate, apple, brioche; Iberico ham, tomato, ciabatta bread; poached river prawns, extra virgin olive oil, spinach bread; smoked marinated swordfish, focaccia bread.
The savory –
The highlight… smoked marinated swordfish
The scone – (warm raisin and plain scones served with preserves and clotted cream in a basket)
The sweet – two tiers of the tea tray are occupied by sweet items – opera hazelnut, chocolate, almond biscuit; eclats d’eclair, almond crumble, Ecuador biscuit; pear tart praline, saffron, chocolate, almond; coriander praline, cocoa butter, chocolate; fizzy lemon, cointreau, cocoa butter.
A special flavor in celebration of Belcolade’s 25th anniversary, raspberry chocolate –
The highlight was the “fizzy lemon, cointreau, cocoa butter”. Every bite fizzes in your mouth like Pop Rocks candies.
I loved the white plates and tea cups decorated with colorful flowers. The pretty chinaware was a perfect addition of color to the simple decor of the lounge. Meanwhile, the tea tray is circular with glass plates.
You can always expect great service from luxury hotels and Island Shangri-La is no different. Friendly staff at the reception desk and lobby were ready to help or answer any questions. Specifically at the lounge, excellent English speaking staff always made sure my pot was provided with hot water.
