Bali equals beaches. Right?
Not exactly. Bali has more than just beaches as I discovered when visiting Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan.
The resort is surrounded by water.
But not the ocean. Instead, it’s the Ayung River. And close to the river are rice fields and Bali’s cultural and artistic center, Ubud.
Back at the resort, there’s a hidden gem of Bali. It’s where you can sit, look out at the backdrop of a forest, relax, have a drink…
It’s called Jati Bar, where afternoon tea at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan is served…
Four Seasons Bali at Sayan is located in Sayan, a village towards the center of the island of Bali. You won’t find beaches here but instead lots of greenery, temples and rice terraces and fields.
It’s also close to the city center of Ubud- Bali’s cultural and art center.
Being at Jati Bar, where afternoon tea is served at Four Seasons Bali at Sayan feels like being in the middle of a forest- but without any discomforts. It is outdoors but under a high ceiling which provides shade from Bali’s hot weather. Fans provide a small breeze to the humid air.
Looking down from the edge of the bar, you can see the Ayung River (the longest river in Bali) and hear it passing by along with soft jazz music playing on the bar’s speakers. And looking straight ahead is green. Lots of green created by a forest of coconut trees. Pops of color appear as birds fly by and a thin strip of water surrounds the edge of the bar.
The somewhat plain colors of light brown and khaki tones adorning the bar helps bring out the very green area in front.
You won’t find many business meetings happening, as this is a resort. Tourists and families were present relaxing and chatting quietly.
Four Seasons Bali at Sayan serves tea from Dharma Teas, a tea distributor based in Bali.
There’s an option of black, white, green, oolong or herbal teas. I went with the classic English breakfast tea which were tea leaves in an about four cup serving sized pot.
One afternoon tea package which can serve two is offered at Four Seasons Bali at Sayan.
The Savory – (two items per person)
Sandwiches- smoked salmon on pumpernickel, cream cheese with tobiko and chicken breast and cucumber sandwich with truffle mayonnaise:
The Scone – (one scone per person)
Freshly baked pandanus (commonly known as pandan) and raisin scones with cream and strawberry jam:
The Sweet – (three items per person)
Assorted berries tartlets with rum pastry cream; lemon and passion fruit pie; white and dark chocolate mousse with sour cherry, pistachio wafer:
Up close of the colorful tartlet with six different fruits!
Overall, the food is a satisfying and a perfect portion without a need to overeat. The fruity taste of the lemon and passion fruit pie somehow reminds you that you’re on an island.
And the scone was one of the best I’ve had in a while- it could be the pandan in it, which is a plant found in southeast Asia and smells so good!
Afternoon tea is served on the typical three tiered English afternoon tea tray- but with a twist! And it is actually a twist as plates are supported by a metallic brown twisted wire. Each plate gets bigger as you go from top to bottom of the afternoon tea tray.
Tea tray and tea cup/pot together create a simple, modern and clean cut look that complements the ambience of Jati Bar.
Welcoming and friendly staff were ready to greet and show the way to Jati Bar.
At the bar, staff brought cold, wet, lemongrass scented towels upon choosing a seat. Excellent English speaking staff poured tea and when the afternoon tea set was brought, they took time to explain what everything was.
